Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Save from wrath and make me pure.
Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyes shall close in death,
When I rise to worlds unknown,
And behold Thee on Thy throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.
Mr. St John is telling Jane to "lean on" the Rock of Ages described in these lyrics to choose her marriage wisely (pg356). St john however uses this falsely as he just wants to marry Jane for help with work not because of love. He wanted Jane to join him in his quest to acquire a higher position in heaven.
I love this allusion!!!! The lyrics totally explain how Jane is at the time when she is with ST John or Sinjin. He wants her to cling to him like he clings to God. He is trying to persuade her with God which is pretty dangerous. One downfall is that your video doesn't work!!
ReplyDeleteGreat work! I listened to the hymn while reading the post; very powerful. :-)
